How to read a vape hardware spec sheet

Most spec sheets in this sector mix engineering data with sales copy on the same page. The order you read the fields in decides whether you spot the problem before the order or after it.

What a spec sheet is for

A spec sheet has one job: to let two parties describe the same object without holding it. It is the reference you compare a sample against, the document a purchase order points at, and the evidence you use when a later run behaves differently from the first.

That job is only done if the sheet is a controlled document. A model code, a revision number and a date are what turn a list of features into something a supplier can be held to. Sheets without them exist in large numbers in this sector, and they are sales material. Read them for orientation, buy against something else.

Read it in this order

  1. Check what document you are holding. Look for a model code, a revision number and a date. A sheet with all three is a controlled document you can hold a supplier to. A sheet with none is a sales page, and the fields on it can change without anybody telling you.
  2. Confirm it describes the SKU you are quoting. Model families share a name across several capacities, intake sizes and mouthpiece types. Match the code on the sheet to the code on the quotation character by character before you read anything else.
  3. Read the fit fields. Thread type, overall length, outer diameter and mouthpiece form decide whether the device works with your battery, your filling line and your packaging. These are the fields that make a whole order unusable when they are wrong, so they come before performance.
  4. Read the oil path fields. Intake diameter, coil material and construction, tank material and centre post or postless architecture decide how your oil moves through the device. Read them together with your own oil viscosity rather than in isolation.
  5. Read the electrical fields. Coil resistance, battery capacity where the device has one, and the output behaviour of the board decide how hard the coil is driven. Constant voltage, constant power and simple unregulated output behave differently with the same coil.
  6. Look for tolerances and test conditions. A number without a tolerance is an intention. A resistance figure with no measurement condition and a capacity with no fill method behind it cannot be checked at goods-in, so ask for the tolerance band and the condition.
  7. Check which documents the sheet references. A spec sheet is not a certificate. Note which test reports and declarations it points to, request those separately, and confirm each one names the model code you are buying.
  8. File the sheet against the sample and the order. Attach the revision you approved to the purchase order and keep it with the retained sample. Without that pairing you cannot prove later that a production run drifted from what was agreed.

Fields that predict performance

Four groups of fields carry almost all of the predictive value.

Intake diameter. This is the single field most often left off a sales sheet and most often responsible for a failed launch. Too small for a thick oil and the coil starves, which the customer reports as a burnt taste. Too large for a thin oil and the tank floods, which the customer reports as a leak. CCELL's published site content lists five standard inlet diameters, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 mm, and states that the diameter is chosen against the oil's characteristics, with thicker oils taking larger holes. Treat that as one manufacturer's published position rather than a universal rule, and see cartridge intake hole size for how to match it.

Coil and tank material. Ceramic, quartz and glass cores behave differently under the same power, and the tank material decides chemical compatibility and how the pack survives a drop. The material is a better predictor of taste complaints than any wattage figure on the sheet.

Coil resistance. Resistance sets how much current flows at a given voltage, so it is meaningless without the battery it will be paired with. A sheet quoting resistance without a tolerance is quoting a target. See cartridge coil resistance.

Output behaviour. Whether the board holds voltage, holds power, or simply connects the cell to the coil changes the experience across the discharge curve. Nextvapor's published product content, for example, describes constant-voltage output on some of its all-in-one devices. Where a sheet is silent on this, ask, because it is the field that decides whether the last puff resembles the first.

Fields that predict very little

  • Puff counts. They depend on draw length, oil, temperature and the user. They are a marketing number and cannot be verified at goods-in.
  • Capacity in millilitres, taken alone. Capacity decides your cost per unit and your fill weight. It says nothing about how the device performs.
  • Adjectives. Premium, medical grade, food safe and similar phrases are only useful when a named material and a referenced test report sit behind them. Ask which document supports the word.
  • Battery capacity without a discharge context. A milliamp-hour figure tells you how much energy is stored, not how the device delivers it.
  • Certification logos on the sheet itself. A logo is not a certificate. The document that matters is the report or declaration, and it must name your model code. See EU compliance for which documents apply.

When a field is missing

A missing field is not a neutral gap. It is the field most likely to move between production runs, because nothing in your paperwork obliges anyone to hold it. Intake diameter, resistance tolerance and tank material go missing more often than the rest.

The fix is short. Ask for the value in writing, then put it on the purchase order rather than leaving it in an email. Anything on the order is a specification. Anything in an email is a conversation. Where the supplier will not commit to a value, that is useful information about how the product is actually controlled, and you can decide what to do with it before you have paid.

One more habit worth forming. When you approve a sample, write the sheet revision on the retained unit and keep them together.
