Four formats cover almost every hardware launch in this sector. They differ on six dimensions that matter to a buyer, and each one trades a strength somewhere else.
Format is a structural decision, and it is the one that constrains everything downstream. It sets your unit cost, your artwork area, your freight weight and, more than buyers expect, your minimum order quantity. Changing it after artwork is drawn means starting the artwork again.
The table below ranks the four relative to each other rather than in absolute numbers, because the absolute numbers move with material, quantity, decoration and where you print. Ask your packaging supplier to quote all four on the same brief and the ranking usually holds while the gaps do not.

Buyers compare the quoted unit price and stop there. Three other things move the real number.
Setup versus material. Printed packaging is setup-driven. Plates, cylinders, dielines and press changeovers cost the same for 1,000 units as for 50,000. That is why the unit price falls steeply at first and then flattens, and why splitting one order across four colourways costs more than the material difference suggests. Finishing. Foil, spot varnish, soft-touch lamination and embossing are each an extra pass. Each pass adds cost, adds lead time and adds a way for a run to be rejected. A single well-executed finish usually looks more considered than three stacked on each other.
Secondary packaging. A pouch that arrives crushed needs an outer carton, and the carton was not in the comparison. Cost the pack that actually leaves your warehouse, including inserts, outer cartons and any tamper evidence, rather than the primary pack alone.
Fit is not a detail. A pack sized for a neighbouring product lets the device rattle, which produces returns that look like hardware faults and are not.

Every format here has a child-resistant variant, but the mechanism differs, and so does the quality of the evidence behind it. Tubes and tins have the longest track record in this sector. CR boxes rely on a locking-tab construction that has to be designed into the dieline from the start. CR pouches exist and the market for them is younger.
Treat child resistance as its own specification with its own paperwork rather than as a property of the format. The report has to describe your exact pack, and a change of closure supplier between runs can end its relevance. One sequencing point that saves reprints. Fix the structure first, place the fixed regulatory marks second, and design third. Producer and importer identification, the crossed-out bin symbol and battery information are not negotiable elements and they need space allocated before the layout is drawn.
