Dynamic viscosity at 20 C, not the extract name on the label, decides whether a cartridge floods on the filling line or dry-hits on the third draw. A 4 x 1.2 mm aperture handles thin 1,000 to 8,000 cP oils, 4 x 1.6 mm covers 10,000 to 35,000 cP terpene blends, and 4 x 2.0 mm full-ceramic or postless architectures are required once viscosity exceeds 40,000 cP.

4 x 1.2 mm (PG/CBD) or 4 x 1.6 mm (8% - 12% terpene blend)
4 x 2.0 mm full-ceramic 510 or postless cotton-free bucket
45 C to 65 C needle temp (800 - 2,000 cP at nozzle), cap within 90 s
1.4 ohm +/- 0.1 ohm sintered core at 1.8 V - 2.6 V

18,000 - 32,000 cP
4 x 1.6 mm Sintered Ceramic Core (Borosilicate Glass Tank)
45 C - 55 C (15G)
1.4 ohm / 2.4 V - 2.8 V
Cannabis and botanical extracts behave as non-Newtonian, shear-thinning fluids whose dynamic viscosity drops by an order of magnitude for every 15 C increase in temperature. Raw Delta-9 or HHC distillate at 20 C measures between 60,000 and 140,000 centipoise (cP), thicker than cold peanut butter. At 55 C on a heated filling tray, that exact same distillate drops to 1,200 to 2,200 cP and flows cleanly through a 14-gauge blunt needle.
Terpenes act as low-viscosity organic solvents (typically 1 to 3 cP at 20 C). Folding 6% to 8% botanical or cannabis-derived terpenes into a 90,000 cP distillate cuts its 20 C viscosity down to roughly 18,000 to 28,000 cP. Folding 12% to 14% High-Terpene Extract (HTE) into decarboxylated live rosin brings room-temperature viscosity into the 15,000 to 35,000 cP range while leaving 2% to 4% native plant waxes in suspension.
An intake aperture is the machined port in the metallic or ceramic chimney wall that feeds oil from the reservoir into the porous heating core. Most European B2B empty 510 cartridges and empty disposables use four circular ports spaced at 90-degree intervals around the base of the post, or eliminate the post altogether in a postless gravity-fed floor.
| Extract Category | Viscosity at 20 C (cP) | Intake Geometry | Coil & Voltage | Fill Needle Temp |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CRD CBD / High-Terpene Sauce (12% - 15%) | 1,500 - 8,000 cP | 4 x 1.2 mm ceramic | 1.4 ohm at 2.2 V - 2.6 V | 38 C - 45 C (16G needle) |
| Standard Terpene-Cut Distillate (6% - 10%) | 12,000 - 35,000 cP | 4 x 1.6 mm ceramic | 1.4 ohm at 2.4 V - 2.8 V | 45 C - 55 C (15G needle) |
| Jar-Tech / Centrifuge Live Rosin (10% - 14% HTE) | 25,000 - 55,000 cP | Postless bucket or 4 x 2.0 mm full-ceramic | 1.4 - 1.6 ohm at 1.8 V - 2.2 V | 45 C - 52 C (14G needle) |
| Uncut Raw Distillate (0% - 4% terpenes) | 65,000 - 140,000 cP | 4 x 2.0 mm full-ceramic or postless | 1.2 - 1.4 ohm at 2.6 V - 3.0 V (with 1.8 V preheat) | 60 C - 68 C (14G needle) |
Aperture diameter only brings oil to the outer wall of the ceramic cylinder; porous capillarity and heat flux move it to the wire. When filling live rosin or terpene-rich live resin, pair a 4 x 2.0 mm intake or a postless chamber with a 1.4 ohm to 1.6 ohm coil driven at 1.8 V to 2.2 V (roughly 2.5 W to 3.4 W). Driving a rosin cartridge at 3.2 V or higher creates a localized thermal spike above 230 C at the coil surface, scorching monoterpenes and darkening the entire reservoir through back-diffusion; see how to liquefy solid live rosin for vape hardware.
On the production floor, semi-automatic heated benchtop fillers and 5-channel CNC gantries in our filling machines catalogue hold the reservoir and silicone feed hoses between 45 C and 65 C. Never heat terpene-rich formulations above 65 C in an open hopper, or volatile monoterpenes evaporate before capping, shifting the finished cartridge viscosity upward by 15,000 to 25,000 cP.
A cartridge filled in a 22 C cleanroom in the Netherlands must survive both a 5 C winter parcel van in Germany and a 32 C summer stockroom in Spain. If your oil sits at 35,000 cP at 20 C, cooling to 8 C raises its viscosity above 110,000 cP, starving a 1.6 mm aperture unless the battery includes a 1.8 V pre-heat pulse; see cartridge cold flow and winter shipping. Conversely, if a 15,000 cP oil is loaded into a 4 x 2.0 mm cartridge and shipped at 32 C, its viscosity drops below 3,500 cP, flooding the central airpath if the silicone mouthpiece seal was capped late.
