Matching cartridge intake size to oil viscosity

Cartridge intake for thick oil is a fitting problem, not a quality problem. The same hardware that performs on distillate will starve on rosin, and the same hardware that performs on rosin will seep on distillate.

Viscosity is the variable, not the extract name

Extract categories are marketing labels with wide internal ranges. Two products both sold as live resin can differ in flow behaviour by an order of magnitude depending on terpene content, cannabinoid ratio, residual solvent and how they were purged. The property that decides whether a fill will move through a 1.2 mm opening is viscosity at the temperature of use, and nothing else in the label tells you that.

So the useful question to put to your extractor is not "is this rosin", it is "what is the viscosity, at what temperature, and how much does it change over the ten degrees either side". If they cannot answer, fill six 510 cartridges across two or three intake sizes and find out empirically. That is faster than arguing about it.

Starting points by fill type

Use the table as a first guess to narrow a test, not as a specification. Every row assumes the cartridge is filled warm and used at room temperature.

How temperature moves the answer

Viscosity falls steeply as an extract warms and climbs again as it cools. That is why a fill that behaves at a 40 °C filling station can refuse to feed the core in an unheated warehouse in February. The cartridge did not change. The oil did.

Size the intake for the coldest realistic condition in the product's life, not for the warm oil in front of you at the filling bench. In practice that means testing a filled sample after it has sat overnight at the low end of your expected storage range, then drawing on it cold. If the first three draws taste scorched and the fourth is normal, the core is not re-wetting fast enough and the intake is too small for that fill at that temperature.

What goes wrong when the intake is too small

  • Dry hits. The element fires against a partly dry core. The result is a burnt taste that customers attribute to the oil, and returns you cannot easily contest.
  • Element damage. Running dry raises local temperature well above normal operating range and can degrade the element and any residue on the wick.
  • Uneven draw. Early draws are weak, later draws are stronger once the core has caught up.
  • Waste at the end of the tank. Thick oil can strand against a narrow aperture, leaving product in the tank when the customer stops using it.

What goes wrong when the intake is too large

  • Seepage. Oil escapes past the chamber into the airpath and out of the mouthpiece or the base.
  • Flooding and gurgling. Oil pools around the element faster than it is vaporised.
  • Transit failures. A pressure drop in an aircraft hold pushes air out of the tank and oil through the opening. Wide intakes fail this way far more often than narrow ones.
  • Shelf failures. A pallet stored above ambient in summer will show the problem across a whole batch rather than one unit.

If leaks are already the symptom you are chasing, work through why vape cartridges leak before changing intake size, because intake is only one of the five causes and it is not the most common one.

How to test before you commit volume

Order the same cartridge body in two or three intake sizes and fill each with your actual production oil, not a stand-in. Fill at your production temperature, cap, and leave the units upright for 24 hours and on their side for another 24. Inspect for seepage at the base and at the mouthpiece. Then draw cold. Keep the units that neither starve nor seep, and only then place the volume order.

What intake size do I need for thick oil?
Thick, undiluted extracts such as live rosin are usually run on the wide end of the range, around 1.8 mm to 2.0 mm, while standard distillate normally sits at 1.0 mm to 1.2 mm. Treat those as starting points and confirm them by filling a sample and testing it at the temperature your customers will actually use.
Does temperature change which intake size I need?
Yes. The viscosity of an extract falls sharply as it warms and rises again as it cools, so a fill that moves freely at the filling station can stop feeding the core in a cold warehouse or a winter delivery van. Size the intake for the coldest condition the product will meet, not for the warm oil in front of you.
Can I use one cartridge for both distillate and rosin?
You can, but you accept one of two compromises. A wide intake sized for rosin will let thin distillate seep and flood, and a narrow intake sized for distillate will starve the core on rosin. If you run both product lines, it is usually cheaper to hold two intake variants of the same cartridge body than to accept returns on either.
