Cartridge break-in and first-draw priming

Learning to prime a 510 cartridge properly removes one of the most common causes of a returned unit: a burnt first puff from a cartridge that was mechanically perfect and simply not ready.

What priming does

A ceramic core is a porous solid with a heating element in or around it. Oil moves through it by capillary action, which is slow and which slows further as viscosity rises. Priming is the deliberate pause that lets that movement finish before heat is applied.

Skip it and the first draw heats a partly dry element. The dry section runs hotter than the wetted section because there is no oil absorbing energy as it vaporises, and the result is a scorched taste that the customer attributes to the oil or to the brand. The cartridge is undamaged in most cases, but the first impression is spent.

Break-in is the same idea extended over the first few draws. The element and the ceramic reach a stable working temperature after several cycles, and a cartridge run gently through those first cycles behaves more consistently than one taken straight to maximum voltage.

Before you start

  • The cartridge must already be filled correctly. Priming does not rescue a cartridge with oil in the centre airpath. See how to fill a 510 cartridge for the fill itself.
  • Know your oil. A thin distillate wets a core far faster than live rosin. The rest period scales with viscosity and there is no single correct number.
  • Have a variable battery to hand. A fixed-output battery works, but it removes the ability to start low. See 510 batteries.
  • Work at room temperature. Priming in a cold room gives you a result that does not transfer to a warm one.

The eight step procedure

  1. Rest the filled cartridge upright. Gravity and capillary action do the work. Standing the cartridge on its base keeps the oil against the core rather than against the mouthpiece seal. Our filling guide gives 15 to 60 minutes as a working window, longer for thicker extracts.
  2. Bring it to room temperature. A cartridge taken straight from a cold store has thicker oil and a stiffer seal, and both slow the wick. Let it equalise before you assess anything.
  3. Inspect the core for even wetting. Look through the tank wall at the ceramic. A fully wetted core reads darker and more uniform than a dry one. A pale patch means part of the element will fire against dry ceramic.
  4. Take two or three unpowered draws. With no battery attached, or with the battery off, draw gently through the mouthpiece. This pulls oil toward the airpath side of the core and confirms the draw resistance is normal before any heat is applied.
  5. Fit a battery at its lowest setting. Do not start at the top of the range. If the battery has a preheat mode, use that instead of a full-power draw for the first cycle.
  6. Take short draws with a pause between them. Two to three seconds on, then several seconds off. Back to back draws stack heat faster than the wick can replace oil, which is the mechanism behind most burnt first impressions.
  7. Step the voltage up only if the draw is thin. One increment at a time, with a pause between steps. If a step makes the taste harsher rather than fuller, go back down. That is the ceiling for that oil in that cartridge.
  8. Record the settings and publish them. For a production batch, prime a sample rather than the whole run, write down the rest time, the working voltage and the ceiling, and put the working voltage on the insert so the end user does not have to rediscover it.

What goes wrong

Firing too early. The most common failure and the least visible, because the cartridge looks fine. If a whole batch tastes scorched on the first draw and clean on the fifth, the rest period was too short rather than the hardware being at fault.

Priming too hard. Long draws at high voltage to force a wick through do the opposite. They boil oil at the surface of the core, leave residue and can drive enough vapour pressure into the tank to push oil past a seal.

Confusing a clog with a dry core. Both give a weak draw. A clog resists air; a dry core does not. That is what the unpowered draw in step four distinguishes, and it is the reason it comes before any power is applied.

Cold chain surprises. A cartridge that primed correctly in a warm room can reach a customer after a cold night in a van, with the oil pulled back out of the core. Not a fault, but worth a line on the insert telling the customer to warm the unit in the hand first.

Priming a batch rather than a unit

You cannot prime a production run individually and there is no reason to. What you can do is prime a defined sample from each batch, record the result, and use it as a release check. Take units from the beginning, middle and end of the run rather than from one carton, since the interesting variation is across the run rather than within a box. Then publish the working settings on the packaging.

Do dry draws actually do anything?
Yes. Two or three unpowered draws pull oil across the core toward the airpath side, which is the side that heats first. They also tell you whether the draw resistance is right before any heat is applied, so a blocked airpath is found while it is still fixable rather than after a burnt first puff.
Should the first draw be at high or low voltage?
Low. Start at the lowest setting the battery offers and step up only if the draw is thin. Starting high on a core that is not fully wetted is the most common way to scorch a cartridge on its first use.
Does priming need repeating later in the cartridge life?
Not as a full sequence, but the same logic applies after any long or cold storage. Bring the cartridge back to room temperature and take a couple of unpowered draws before the first powered one, because cold oil wicks slowly and the coil will otherwise fire against a partly dry core.
